PETS Q & A

Moving to new apartments but they don't allow pets?
I'm moving to La Habra, California and the apartments do not allow pets. I haven't been diagnosed with depression by a doctor but I am in depression right now. I lost my home, parents are getting divorced, etc. Anyway, I called this place that does allow pets but they were out of my mom's budget. They told me however that if we were having trouble finding apartments because of the " no pet" rules that I can say its a companion dog and get a doctor's note and legally they'd have to let me keep it. I've been looking into it and there's alot of different people who say different things. Can someone please help me?P.S.I have looked for other aparments but they're all too expensive. Giving my dog away is out of the question she's old and would probably have a heart attack and die if I gave her away< 3

Glass Lizards as pets.....?
I just recently caught this little snake in my backyard. Yes i know theyre not technically snakes, but it is a snake. lol. I was just wondering, i have two ball pythons, so i know about snake care, but my pythons are much much bigger and have a huge cage with lighting and stuff. My few questionss are 1. What and how often do they eat?2. How big do they get?3. I noticed he burrows alot. Does he do this in fear or is that its nature? Should i give him perhaps a cave or fake tree or just continue to let him do what he wants?

Do your pets know you by name, or some other trick of the senses?

What are chinchillas like as pets?
I am debating about possibly getting a chin. Have done research and feel like I could be a good home. I have owned guinea pigs, rabbits, and rats in the past as well as various other small animals. But I want to make sure they are the right pet for me as they are a long term commitment, at least a bit more than say a rat. I have a 48" L x 24" W x 48" T cage already that was my rabbit's cage. With some minor modifications I think it could be suitable for a chin. Anyways are they messy? In the cage and out? do they pee out the side of their cages like rats do? Do they throw poos and food out of the cage? What can I expect out of their personality? Are they like rats in that they are affectionate and super smart. I have two of the sweetest girls. But ratties smell a bit more than a chin, plus a chin lives soo much longer than a rat will. Which is nice. Sorry for all the questions. LOL....

What make better pets: guinea pigs or hamsters?
I'm currently in rehab I know, I know... and my mom says when I successfully complete treatment I can get a new pet. Animals are my passion, so this is a big deal for me, and I want to get the right pet. I currently own an 11 year old dog and a 4 year old dog, along with a 6 year old leopard gecko, a 2 year old cat and an 11 month old rabbit and a 3 year old rabbit. I know it sounds like a lot but I have a ridiculous amount of free time on my hands. I am particularly interested in guinea pigs and hamsters. I'm pretty educated on guinea pigs but not so much hamsters. I had a mouse a few years ago so I know how to care for small rodents like that but I wanted to be sure if their care is similar or not. Also, could a guinea pig live in a large rabbit cage? It's sort of like the size of a small medium sized dog kennel, and sort of designed the same way but it's made for rabbits. The bottom of it is flat and isn't designed like most small animal cages. I also know that guinea pigs do better in groups but like I said, tons of free time. So...any personal experiences with guinea pigs and hamsters? Anyone who has had both? What do you guys think?

Why don't people understand that pets are a PERMANENT responsibility?
I'm getting a kitten, and as I can't spend much, and also want to adopt a homeless kitten, I'm looking at animal shelters and classifieds like Craigslist. And seriously, Craigslist is just horrifying me. There are so many posts of people trying to get rid of their cats with the worst excuses " Oh, I got this kitten because it was just so cute in the store, but then I took it home and found out I had allergies." Or " Oh, they were having a deal on black cats at the animal shelter during Halloween, so I bought her, but now I figured out that I work 70 hours a week and don't have enough time to take care of her." Or " This kitten just isn't fitting into our family lifestyle the way we hoped she would." Seriously? These are all things that should have been thought about before the cat was purchased Who purchases a cat without knowing if they have allergies? And if you knew you worked 70 hours a week, why on earth would you get a cat that you knew you couldn't care for? And what did you expect, an angel of a kitten that would never put a toe out of line and would never forget to use its litterbox? Good Lord, how selfish Kittens aren't stuffed animals. You don't buy them on impulse because they're cute. You don't buy them on a trial basis, and then give them back if you decide you don't like them.Really, what is WRONG with people? I mean, ANYONE could adopt these cats some crazy sadist, or someone who's careless enough to let their cat get run over by a car... why would anyone buy a cat they didn't plan for?I mean, I'm adopting my cat and planning to have her for up to twenty years. I'm a young adult now, so I thoroughly expect to still be responsible for the kitten I adopt when I'm in my late thirties. Because that's the unspoken contract you sign when you take responsibility for an animal. You don't give away a baby because she spits up or uses up too many diapers an animal has a right to life and stability, too Don't you think it's horrible the way people treat pets as disposable?

My apartment doesn't allow pets but I have anxiety can I get them to let me have my dog live with me?
I currently go to Penn State and my dog lives with my parents. She's a smaller dog only about 40 pounds. I have anxiety and often have panic attacks, and at home my dog was always there and helped calm me down. Now that she isn't living with me I have more panic attacks and my anxiety has increased quite a bit, especially because of the stress of school along with her not living with me. I want my dog to live with me but my apartment complex has a strict no pet policy. I read online that service dogs aren't considered to be " pets" because they are needed by the specific person. I'm not trying to be able to take her everywhere with me like in restaurants and stores, I just want to know if there is something I can do that would make me be able to have her live in my apartment. Switching apartments is not an option because I signed a lease that isn't up for another year. Any information you guys have would be so helpful. Thanks in advanced I realize she wouldn't be a service dog I specifically said I don't want or need a service dog to go with me everywhere.

I might start breeding mice for my local pet store, and i have some questions....?
I breed mice for my corn snake and california kingsnake, but everytime i go to get some new breeders the pet stores mice are sick so i can't get any. They are considering getting rid of their current breeder and letting me be their new breeder. So, I'm just wondering about how many mice does the average pet store go through in a month? I've calculated about how many babies i'd get a month with the mouse rack that i want to build, with 4 rows of 3 med sized tubs with 3 females and 1 male i can get about 12 babies per mouse and 36 babies per month per tub, so thats about 432 mice a month, then minus the ones i'd save for new breeders and babies that i'd use for my snakes. so prob. about 400 mice a month or less depnding on if every mouse has 12 and if i have no canibles. Is that more mice that what an average pet store would use? thats including the live feeders pets they sell and the frozen ones. so any info you have on pet store breeding that'll be great because i just breed on a small scale because my kingsnake eats 1 fuzzy a day i feed my snakes what they want, if she eats everyday she eats every day, even if that means waisting mice to figure out how much they want, i dont like feeding them once a week if they r still hungry, thats just cruel and my corn eats 2 pinkies a week. and just in case your wondering, the first rack will consist of 2 large tubs at the bottom to seperate the males and females for sale, with 4 rows of 3 med tubs for breeding, then a secong rack consisting of 5 rows of 5 small tubs will be made to hold all of the females raising litters, so they wont be crowded and they wont be all dirty and everything like breeders who raise mice for alot of pet stores. And please no complaints about feeding mice live or dead to snakes is cruel, its not, mice were raised for snake food and always will be, they are prey not preditor. if snakes didnt eat mice than they'd die, its like saying they should eat grass even though they are carnivourus creatures.

What do you think is the ultimate wish in your pet's heart?
Besides wishing for more food or your food , or even more love a pet can never get enough , besides wishing you would quit your job and spend more time with him or her, or that you would never again go away on holiday. I think all pets wish that. What is your pet's ultimate wish?

Has anyone had a hermit crab as a pet and found it difficult to raise? in other words, the hermit crab died?
