Question: Why are some answers users against adopting on craigslist pet section?
(Posted by: Sdkhfklj on 2010-03-13 01:27:07)
If people don't adopt the the animals won't they just end up in shelters and be most likely put down? Please don't get offensive i'm just curious. yes pixie i agree that selling pets on craigslist is bad and yes it's bad when people running puppy mills try and take advantage of the pets section but what about the people who just want to rehome their pets |

Because no reputable breeder would advertise on Craiglist and it's likely that most animals listed on there are from puppy mills, backyard breeders or are scams completely. You're unable to see the puppy's home life and meet its parents, and the puppy's breeder is unable to meet you and see where the puppy will be living, things a responsible prospective buyer and breeder would take seriously. The Internet anonymity makes it difficult to check for things like temperament, health and genetics issues, papers, socialization, vaccines, etc. If people want to use Craiglist to buy puppies instead of working with reputable local breeders, shelters or rescue groups, that's their prerogative. But in doing so it's likely they're contributing to the pet overpopulation and also likely that the dog they're getting has issues of some kind. EDIT: Even when it comes to rehoming, Craigslist is still a sketchy place. If you're serious about rehoming, you'd have better luck speaking with friends and acquaintances, speaking with your local vet or breed club, breed rescues, etc. There is no way I would EVER post a Craigslist ad if, heaven forbid, I had to part with my puppy. Just as no responsible breeder should ever post ads on Craigslist, no responsible or well-informed dog owner should, either. |

Maybe those users have had bad experiences? Craigslist tends to be iffy at times. I don't see anything wrong with adopting off of anywhere. You just have to go in expecting that maybe that animal isn't the healthiest. |

Many of people on craiglist and other online websites are backyard breeders; Which causes problems such as temperment issues including aggression, fears, excessive phobias, genetic faults at the EXPENSE of the new owner which can be very costly, and behaviour issues caused by careless breeding. No good breeder advertises on craiglist or any other online website, so the money that goes in encourages irresponsbile breeder, and contributes to the death of shelter animals Another problem with craiglist, many puppy millers advertise there designer dogs through petstores advertised on craiglist, again these people only care about Money and must be super cute, not for health or temperment, which causes Which causes problems such as temperment issues including aggression, fears, excessive phobias, genetic faults at the EXPENSE of the new owner which can be very costly, and behaviour issues caused by careless breeding. No good breeder advertises on craiglist or any other online website, so the money that goes in encourages irresponsbile breeder and contributes to the suffering of parents of petstore puppies, and contributes to the death of shelter animals. Plus your likely to fall victiim of the online puppy scams with websites such as craiglist. Looking at it now, gosh a big scam just as i'm reading |

A lot of the animals found on craigslist are from BYB (Backyard Breeders), they were bred to make money and have a high chance of developing health issues later in their life. They are one of the reasons why many animals are in shelters and get put down. With the people who just want to rehome their pets then I guess that's a different story but when rehoming your pets don't advise putting them on a website or newpaper because you will never know who they will end up with. If you are interested in adopting an animal that is being rehomed then it is still advised that you see the dog and it's owners before taking any action. |

As others have said, random web listings like craigslist are mainly used by disreputable backyard breeders and puppy millers. These people do not health screen or respect the dogs they are "using " to breed from. They may be bred at every heat to produce as many puppies as they can to make money, with no other reason in mind. # By purchasing puppies from people like this, you are simply feeding their bank balance and enabling them to keep on producing more puppies to supply the demand. You are not helping dogs by buying puppies from them, you are helping the greeders to keep creating more and to continue perpetuating this disgusting trade. |
