I have a cockatiel and I go to school as well, and he does fine by himself at home because he is used to my schedule. Any pet bird should get plenty of out of the cage time during the day, at least a few hours but more is always better. At least for a few hours a bird should have time to be out and about and getting some needed exercise. Birds can and should be out even more. Simple ways to do this are having your bird perched on your shoulder while your doing something as simple as being on the computer, or having your bird on a perch on your desk while doing homework. Some people even shower and eat with their birds. Birds are flock creatures and enjoy doing as much as they can with their "flock " which in this case, is you. Birds should spend as much time as they can out of their cages as possible, especially if they are kept as single pets. In the wild they are used to always being with other birds 24/ 7 so in captivity we want to give them as much social time as we can. Birds crave a schedule. They like to expect things. My bird is used to me leaving in the morning, and coming home in the afternoon and spending time with him. He expects this and waits for me. On the weekends he gets even more time from me. If you think you cannot spend enough time with a bird, it's best not to buy one. Birds can become lonley without proper interaction and this can cause them stress and depression and cause behavioral problems such as screaming and feather plucking. |
